Summery Vibes: Sun Kissed Fabric Collection

Even though it's technically winter, here in Florida we're used to warm sunshine this time of year! You'll often find us Floridians decorating palm tress with Christmas lights, and there's been several years where I've even gone to the beach on New Year's Day with the family.

With this in mind, we decided to stick to what we know and bring in some warmer climates with Maureen Cracknell’s latest collection, Sun Kissed! Inspired by soaking up the sunshine and glowing skin after a cool swim, this fabric line features cute smiley suns, swimming pool tiles, tropical florals and palm trees swaying in a relaxing breeze. It's like one big tropical dream.

With a color palette of ocean blues, cherry reds and citrus fused yellows, Sun Kissed is sure to create a “island escape” feel in your sewing projects.  From “summer time” feeling quilts, throw pillows, rugs, beachy accessories, and effortless, resort-inspired garments for strolling along a boardwalk, you’ll definitely have some “fun in the sun” sewing with these twenty prints!

Top 5 DIY Festive Pillows

Festive pillows

One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is get together with my family, and spend a day decorating the house while listening to Christmas music. We always split the tasks within our household. My mom always decorates the tree, my dad puts up the Christmas lights outside, and I”m always in charge of decorating the inside of the house. ‘Till this day, I love making my home feel all cozy with our festive table runners, fancy dinner plates, and filling the house with vanilla cinnamon spiced candles! Yum! Of course, we couldn’t forget the pillows to add for that special touch, and to cuddle with after eating a big meal! If you love decorating your home, here’s my favorite festive pillows (all with patterns) that you can create. They also make cute gifts for the holidays too!

  1. White Winter Pillow: Using our Sparkler Fusion fabrics, we’ve created this neutral colored picture perfect for the winter months. Finished size: 20'' x 20''
  2. Bias Weave Pillow: Using Katarina Rocella’s Blithe fabric collection, Nicole Young created this oversized pillow to showcase the fabric but small enough to tackle instead of a starting a quilt. Finished size: 26'' x 23''
  3. Let it Snow Pillow: One year, we created this pillow for Bernina, also using Blithe fabrics, that was super duper fun to make and to display in your home! Finished size: 20'' x 20''
  4. Wooly & Friends Pillow: With the cool tones of Lambkin fabric collection by Bonnie Christine, this pillow stands out with it’s triangle shape and its very cozy creature, “Sir. Wooly!” Finished size: 14''x 14''
  5. Enchanted Forest Pillow: Last but not least, we have this fun pointed pillows that can be put at any corner of a room! Also, easy to make with the included template. Finished size: 4’’x 6’’, 5 ¼'' x 8½'', 6'' x 10½''

Wishing everyone a lovely holiday season,

Impactful Sewing - How to Make a "Double Tulip" Block

Hey There Fabric Friends,

Do you gravitate to certain color palettes when you are designing quilts? Are there colors that you haven’t quite explored yet? For me red and black are two colors that just haven’t entered it’s way into my quilty brain but with the release of AGF’s new Fusions collection Silkroad everything has changed! I had the pleasure of sewing up the Free Quilt Pattern featuring Silkroad called “Shoji”, it was such a delight and I quickly fell in love with the elegant, regal feel the colors portrayed  to me. I knew for my next block video I had to find a block worthy of these rich colors which is why I chose the “Double Tulip” Block!

There was quite a bit of piecing in this 12” block but I am excited about the outcome! Enjoy the video below and have fun  finding your favorite prints from the collection. Mine is by far the “Magnolia Study” print. The super rich red background and the hand drawn black and white blooms are sooo stunning.

Don’t forget to check out our new Lookbook filled with projects made with this romantic collection.

Happy Sewing,

My Photo Stash - Mini Quilt (Magnificent Sunset)

Hello everyone!

I am really excited to be back, I am typing exactly as I'm speaking because I cannot control the excitement.

Last time I wrote here, I shared with you my new source of inspiration. If you want to read that story again, or if you haven't read it please CLICK HERE.

I took all those beautiful fabrics in bright colours and I started playing around to create a mini quilt for the wall.

Here are the fabrics because: VIBRANT!

Pure_elements_my_photo_stash

I confess I did a bit of pre-design on the computer, but actually when I started placing things in real life I liked it even more. Here is a photo I took with my phone while I was placing pieces around:

Wip_my_photo_stash

Quilting police: please don't come after me, I am just a girl standing in front of some beautiful fabric with extreme happiness to create the things I see in my mind. Having said that here is a close up of my baby:

My_photo_stash_close_up
I decided to knot it instead of quilting it because I was sewing at home and Lolita Jazz, my sister's cat (also my goddaughter), lives by the machine. This way I could do it in my room. I also love knotted quilts, they have this nostalgia and calm-process feeling. I would be happy making knots all day, drinking tea by the fire because I like corny. I'm looking for corny in my life (this is a reference to the movie The Holiday).

Here is the final project:

I wouldn't normally gravitate toward these colours. I stick to primary red, jet black and crisp white, but I had to do it. That photo (also framed on the table) and its tones inspired me SO MUCH.

Because of that, I am doing a giveaway of the Pure Elements I used here, hoping it will also inspire many of you to create.

To enter, please leave a comment below telling me about a photo that moves you and the kind of project it will inspire you to make. I will choose my favourite before the year ends and then contact the winner so that she/he will get new fabric for the NEW YEAR!

I wish all of you the happiest times during the holidays, may you share many laughs and enjoy time together with your loved ones. We don't need as many gifts as we are made to believe, but we do need present moments (without phones). If we are going to have gifts may they be intentional and made with love.

As always: ROCK N' SEW!

A Nod to The East: Silkroad Fusion Collection

Hi Makers!

If you have been following AGF for a while, you would know that we don't often focus on contrasting colors of black, red, and white in our collections. Well, we decided to do things a little different this time and this time, and bring them to center stage in our latest collection! Inspired by what you’d discover while traveling the trading route that connected The East to The West, AGF created its latest collection, “Silkroad Fusion.” This fabric line celebrates the emerging trend of Asian influences in textiles with designs from ancient techniques of brushwork that’s modernized with geometrics and florals, creating a unique, exotic mix for your sewing.

We decided to do a new take on color combinations and use full bodied hues of scarlet red and charcoal black mixed with pops of white. Silkroad Fusion is ideal for creating elegant and impactful sewing projects. Available in cotton with select prints in knits and a rayon, these designs can be used to sew bold quilts, pillows, table runners, wall hangings, Japanese-style garments like kimonos, and statement accessories.

Quilt Block Tutorial- How to Make a "Arrow Point's Block"

Hello Fabric Friends,

As makers we create because we need to in order to survive. It’s our outlet where we can roam free and make something from raw materials into something that didn’t exist the day before. We create for necessity because handmade items are important to us. We create to bring beauty into the world and we love sharing our work and a little piece of our hearts with everyone. Which brings me to the release of our New Fusion collection called Art District because it celebrates us as makers, creating our own masterpieces to bring light into our lives and others.

I am excited to share a new block tutorial I added to the AGF Quilt Block Collection called the “Arrow Points” Block! Movement is very important when it comes to putting together a quilt so am am super stoked with the way this block came out.

Art-District

My two favorite prints are the “Cat Nap District” print because well I am a total cat lady and the “City Sounds District” print because it showcases so many amazing places around the world that I hope to travel to in my life time.

Come sew with me by watching the step by step video below. Let me know what you think of the block!

Happy Sewing,

Meli
