Inspired by Greek Island, Skopelos, Katarina turned her vision and memories into an artful abstraction with vivid floral and local scenery of land and sea and used colors like sea blues, poppy pink and chalk white to bring this whole collection together.

We were able to find the perfect spot, on the northern beaches of South Florida and it had small little details that screamed, SKOPELOS. Hey fabric lovers,

I hope everyone had a nice and easy week! We are getting ready for Quilt Market so lots of fun over here. I’m super excited to share with you this tutorial sent to us from Leah Duncan. Using Leah's collection Morning Walk, this is the perfect afternoon and/or party activity for the little ones of the house (or the child in all of us). Scroll down for the pattern + instructions... 

 Materials

• Printer and printer paper
• 5 pieces of 8” x 10”card stock or thin cardboard
• Scissors
• 5 popsicle sticks
• Spray adhesive 
• 10 small paper fasteners
• Glue
• 1/8” hole punch
• Morning Walk fabric listed below

Directions

1. Cut selected morning walk fabric to 8” x 5” rectangles
2. Print out the morning walk animal puppet template onto regular white printer paper.
3. Lay out your fabric and animal templates and group the template with the fabric on a piece of card stock for each animal.
4. Cut the template so that the body is separate from the legs and head and pair the part with the corresponding fabric. The image of the completed animal is for your reference throughout the tutorial.
5. In a well-ventilated area (we recommend doing this outside) use spray adhesive to glue each piece of fabric to the card stock.  Two pieces of fabric fit on one piece of card stock. On the opposite side of the card stock, use spray adhesive to glue the body, head, and legs of the animal on the back of its’ corresponding fabric. Be generous with the glue and really press the fabric into the card stock for a tight seal. Wait for the glue to dry completely.
6. With sharp scissors cut out each body part. If the fabric starts to become unglued simply use regular glue to repair those areas.
7. With the 1/8” hole punch make a hole on the dot. Attach the head and legs to the body with the paper fasteners.  Use the finished animal print out as a guide.
8. Glue a Popsicle stick to the back of your animal.  Hold and wait for the glue to fully dry before playing with your animal.

Today I've been working with fabrics from Fantasia designed by Sara Lawson. I love the soft colors and the playful, whimsical feel of the prints. If you haven't checked out the lookbook click here to get inspired! I was inspired to make a table runner called Enchanting and used the Unicorn Fable Sageplant print as my inspiration. This table runner would be perfect as wall hanging in a little girls room or on her dresser next to her jewelry box and stuffed animals. Here is what you need to get started! 

Fabric Requirements 

Fabric A - FAN-3072 3/8 yd.
Fabric B - Fan-3080- 1/3 yd- for fussy cutting
Fabric C - FAN- 4079- 1/4 yd.
Fabric D- PE-436 - 3/8 yd.
Fabric E - PE- 442- 3/8 yd.
Fabric F- PE-411- 1/4 yd.
Binding- FAN-3078 - 154” long- 4 strips - 1/4 yd.
Backing - FAN-3077- 1 3/4 yds.

Cutting Instructions 

Twelve (12) - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2“ squares from Fabric A
Twelve (12) - 4” x 4“ squares from Fabric A
Two (2) -3 1/2” x 6 1/2“ strips from Fabric B
Two(2) -6 1/2” x 6 1/2“ square from Fabric B
Six (6) - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2“ squares from Fabric C
Six (6) - 4” x 4’“ squares from Fabric C
Twelve (12) - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” squares from Fabric D
Twelve (12)- 4“x 4” squares from Fabric D
Twelve (12) - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2“ squares from Fabric E
Twelve (12) -4” x 4“ squares from Fabric E
Six (6) - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” squares from Fabric F
Six (6) - 4”x 4” squares from Fabric F

To create two half square triangle with Fabric A and Fabric D. Take a 4” x 4” square from both fabrics. (Diagram 1.1) Place on top with right sides together! Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other with a pencil or water soluble pen. Sew on each side of the line you drew at 1 /4”. Cut on your diagonal line. Press seams open (Diagram 1.2)
Square off half square triangles to equal 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” (Diagram 1.3)

You will need a total of 10 A/D HST’s, 12 C/E HST’s, 12 A/F HST’s and 12 D/E HST’s.

To create piece one sew the following rows together:
Row 1- Sew one 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D to a A/D HST, to a 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” strips from Fabric B to A/D HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D.
Row 2- Sew one A/D HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/F HST to another A/F HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/D HST.
Arrange and sew HST according to row 2.
Row 3- Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/F HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F, to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F to a A/F HST
to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A
Row 4- Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a C/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C, to a C/E HST , to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C,
to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E.
Row 5- Sew a D/E HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E, to a C/E HST to another C/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a D/E HST.

Once Row 1 through 5 are sewn, press seams open and sew rows together to create a piece that looks like Diagram 3.2!

For the next piece sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D to a D/E HST. Repeat this step one more time. Next sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D to a A/D HST. Repeat this step one more time. Arrange your pieces following Diagram 4.1. Sew row 6 to row 7. Next take a 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” square from Fabric B. Arrange pieces according to Diagram 4.2 and sew. You will need to create to of these pieces.

To create piece 3 sew the following rows together:
Row 8 - Sew a A/D HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A, to a A/F HST, to another A/F HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/D HST.
Row 9 - Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/F HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F, to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F, to a A/F HST,
to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A.
Row 10 - Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a C/E HST , to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C, to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C, to a C/E HST, to a
3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E.
Row 11-Sew a D/E HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E, to a C/E HST to another C/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a D/E HST.

Once Row 8 through 11 are sewn, press seams open and sew rows together to create a piece that looks like Diagram 5.2!

To create piece 4 sew the following rows together:
Row 12 - Sew a A/D HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A, to a A/F HST, to another A/F HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/D HST.
Row 13 - Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A to a A/F HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F, to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric F, to a A/F HST,
to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric A.
Row 14 - Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a C/E HST , to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C, to another 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric C, to a C/E HST, to a
3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E.
Row 15 - Sew a D/E HST to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E, to a C/E HST to another C/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric E to a D/E HST.
Row 16 - Sew a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D to a D/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” strip from Fabric B, to a D/E HST, to a 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square from Fabric D.

Once Row 12 through 16 are sewn, press seams open and sew rows together to create a piece that looks like Diagram 6.2!

Sew the five pieces you created together following Diagram  7. Then it is time to quilt and bind your table runner! 

Quilt Assembly 

Sew right sides together. 

Place BACKING FABRIC on a large surface wrong side up. Stretch it with masking tape against that surface.Place BATTING on top of backing fabric.Place TOP on top of the batting with right side facing up. Smooth away wrinkles using your hands.Pin all layers together and baste with basting thread, using long stitches. You can also use safety pins to join the layers. Machine or hand quilt starting at the center and working towards the corners. Remember that quilting motives are a matter of personal preference. Have fun choosing yours! After you finished, trim excess of any fabric or batting, squaring the quilt to proceed to bind it.

Binding 

Sew right sides together. 

Cut enough strips 1½" wide by the width of Fabric FAN-3078 to make a final strip 154" long. Start sewing the binding strip in the middle of one of the sides of the quilt, placing the strip right side down and leaving an approximated 5" tail. Sew with ¼" seam allowance (using straight stitch), aligning the strip’s raw edge with the quilt top’s raw edge.Stop stitching ¼" before the edge of the quilt (DIAGRAM B 1). Clip the threads. Remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot. Fold the strip in a motion of 45° and upward, pressing with your fingers (DIAGRAM B2). Hold this fold with your finger, bring the strip down in line with the next edge, making a horizontal fold that aligns with the top edge of the quilt (DIAGRAM B3). Start sewing at ¼" of the border, stitching all the layers. Do the same in the four corners of the quilt. Stop stitching before you reach the last 5 or 6 inches. Cut the threads and remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot.Lay the loose ends of the binding flat along the quilt edge, folding the ends back on themselves where they meet. Press them together to form a crease. Using this crease as the stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding with right sides together (you can help yourself marking with a pencil if the crease is difficult to see). Trim seam to ¼" and press open. Complete the sewing. Turn binding to back of the quilt, turn raw edge inside and stitch by hand using blind stitch.

This collection was inspired by Sarah's favorite childhood cartoon film, in where a unicorn was the protector of a forest and as long as it lived there, hunters could not hunt the animals of the forest.  Sarah wanted to add a modern and mature spin to the unicorn by using mystical, lighthearted illustrations with vibrant strokes of color, and storytelling camouflaged with playful details. This collection can be used for an array of projects, from children’s wear to bags to quilts. Stick around a little longer to learn how can you win a fat quarter bundle of this collection.
