We got to talking and the Starburst quilt was born. This quilt was made using 12 fat quarters from my Indie collection. Melissa did a great job in creating an easy to follow tutorial and even gives you 3 different size options to choose from.

Fat Quarter Gang - INDIE Project Bag by luvinthemommyhood

FatQuarterGANG_banner400pxBLUE
Hi everyone, it's Shannon from luvinthemommyhood here today to share my newest tutorial for the Fat Quarter Gang the INDIE Project Bag Pattern!

Picture-1-600

Anyone who knows me knows that I always have tons of projects on the go.  I never go anywhere without at least one knitting/sewing project.  Along with my projects I always have my trusty journals to write and sketch more ideas in.  I even keep a journal beside the bed for ideas like the INDIE Bag when they pop into my head in the middle of the night.

Picture-2-600

The INDIE  Project Bag came to me late one night when I was laying in bed having trouble sleeping. Sometimes when I can't sleep I think about sewing or knitting and the methodology soothes me.  I was thinking of all the projects I have on the go and trying to schedule in my mind when I was going to get them all done.  I realized that in order to make it easier for me to transport a lot of my projects at one time to my weekly knit nights or meetings for upcoming projects I would need a bigger project bag.  Not just any project bag though. A simple tote just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I wanted one with some attitude.  A bit of modern, a hint of retro and of course, some quilting goodness.

Picture-3-600
I knew I was going to be using Pat's new line Indie and I had been daydreaming that day about how much I loved the line.  All of a sudden visions of the dashes and angles from two of my fave prints in Indie popped into my head and the design of the INDIE project bag was born.  And because this is all about fat quarters I knew just sewing together 2 half squares and appliqueing strips on wasn't gonna cut it.  Nope, this bad boy needed geometry.  Heck even my accountant hubby helped out calculating these pattern pieces so that you can make almost the whole bag out of fat quarters! Yay!  I love that!

It's fun to make, a great project to practice your quilting/topstitching skills and just think of all the fabric and color combos you could use!!

Picture-4-600
The INDIE Project Bag is composed of pattern pieces that are pieced together and quilted subtly.  It's all in the little details in this bag.  The angular strips add a fun pop of solids while nestling nicely with the triangular quilted pieces each accentuating the light/dark tones in the prints.
Picture-5-600
The strips feature one of my fave things to do when sewing and that's topstich.  I get so excited anytime I get to do some fun topstitching or edgestiting!

Love it.  For this bag the topstitching centers and weights the strips adding a nice finish.

Picture-6-600
Ohhh... the stitching!

Picture-7-600
The triangle corner pieces are quilted in a diamond like pattern that replicates and plays on the pattern design that I ADORE in Indie
Picture-8-600
It's fully lined with pockets and even the straps feature batting to keep your shoulders comfy when you are bringing along your latest hand quilting project or maybe even that sweater you are working on.  Heck you could even fit an afghan in there!
Picture-9-600

I love when something that starts as a dreamy sketch in the wee hours in the night turns into my favorite, go to-bring anywhere bag. Would you like to make one too?

To make an Indie Project Bag you will need the following supplies:
  • (1) “Fat Quarter” of each of the following prints from Indie & Pure Elements for your outer bag:
  • PE-428 Nocturnal Pure Elements *
  • PE-426 Apricot Crepe Pure Elements *
  • IN-5102 Afro Fusion Dusk *
  • 1/2 yard IN-5209 Tapestry Salmon (for outer bag and straps)
  • 1/2 yard IN-5207 Royal Nature Nectar (for lining & pocket)
  • Co-ordinating thread
  • (2) pieces 16 1/2“ x 16 1/2“ of batting for bag
  • (2) pieces 6“ x 26“ of batting for strap
  • (1) 14mm Magnetic Snap
  • (2) 2” x 2” pieces of batting for snap Quilting Pins if desired.
  • Fabric Marker Seam Ripper Scissors and/or rotary cutter & mat
*Note: A fat quarter is 18" x 22".  I chose to do my straps in the same colorway as one of my triangle prints so I used a 1/2 yard of that particular fabric to get my strap length.  You could easily swap your strap fabric for a different print or a solid as well and be able to make the outer pieces with just fat quarters.

Finished dimensions of the bag: 15 1/2" x 15 1/2"

Sewing Room of the Month

Sewing_room_logo_web
This month's sewing room belongs one of the coolest chicks we know. We all met Emma from Ballarat Patchwork  during Spring Quilt Market this year and let me tell you this Aussie was a ton of fun to chat with! Emma was here on her first ever market where she was helping her friend Melly from Melly & Me with her booth. Both ladies were a blast to hang out with (and since I seceretly would love to have an Australian accent I hung out with them the most I could hoping it would rub off... sadly, no luck.)

During one of our dinners together Emma showed me her shop and home back in the down under. I fell in love with the color and the simplicity of the space. I will let her tell you the story of how her home came to be and how shae made her sapce work for her... so lets get to it :)

My Creative Space.

IMG_8556
My creative space is actually just a corner in my living area. I am very lucky to own a patchwork shop and my little house/apartment is out the back. Living the dream as some of my customers say. I started the business (Ballarat Patchwork) 9 ½  years ago and had an opportunity to buy the property 4 years ago.

76333_176634222347198_5190361_n
The original rear of the building was a residence built in the 1860’s. Unfortunately the building was not in a state to be renovated and had to be demolished and I created a 1 bedroom place for me and my two cats, Buffy and Willow, to live.

404371_354122971264988_394996216_n
The corner of the living room is were I do my creative thing and consists of two antique tables painted white, a fabulous old dental drawer I saved from my Dad’s surgery renovation and a set of overhead cupboards from Ikea.

IMG_8603

A closer look at the cabinets..

IMG_8545
I try to keep my sewing table as clear as possible as it is the only space I really have to sew. The overhead cupboards are fantastic for storing all my current projects, future projects and all the tools of the trade.

Storage

A new addition to my sewing storage problem, is a set of under window drawers that store my fabric stash. These also double as a bench seat and a place for the cats to sun themselves. I am always on the lookout for clever storage ideas and ways of creating more room.

IMG_8486
My space isn’t the largest so when I sew I turn the table out on the side which gives me room to quilt the big stuff. ( and also allows me to watch a bit of tv while sewing ) I also don’t have enough floor area to baste quilts so it is lucky that the shop has a lovely bright class room with lots of space. Very handy for laying out large quilts for piecing or basting.

IMG_8540
My sewing space is not large but it shows if you are creative with the room available you can create a craft haven for yourself.

Above is my "patchwork sofa cover" that I made about 10 months ago and love the life it gives my space.
