Anyone who knows me knows that I always have tons of projects on the go. I never go anywhere without at least one knitting/sewing project. Along with my projects I always have my trusty journals to write and sketch more ideas in. I even keep a journal beside the bed for ideas like the INDIE Bag when they pop into my head in the middle of the night.
The INDIE Project Bag came to me late one night when I was laying in bed having trouble sleeping. Sometimes when I can't sleep I think about sewing or knitting and the methodology soothes me. I was thinking of all the projects I have on the go and trying to schedule in my mind when I was going to get them all done. I realized that in order to make it easier for me to transport a lot of my projects at one time to my weekly knit nights or meetings for upcoming projects I would need a bigger project bag. Not just any project bag though. A simple tote just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I wanted one with some attitude. A bit of modern, a hint of retro and of course, some quilting goodness.
I knew I was going to be using Pat's new line Indie and I had been daydreaming that day about how much I loved the line. All of a sudden visions of the dashes and angles from two of my fave prints in Indie popped into my head and the design of the INDIE project bag was born. And because this is all about fat quarters I knew just sewing together 2 half squares and appliqueing strips on wasn't gonna cut it. Nope, this bad boy needed geometry. Heck even my accountant hubby helped out calculating these pattern pieces so that you can make almost the whole bag out of fat quarters! Yay! I love that!
It's fun to make, a great project to practice your quilting/topstitching skills and just think of all the fabric and color combos you could use!!
The INDIE Project Bag is composed of pattern pieces that are pieced together and quilted subtly. It's all in the little details in this bag. The angular strips add a fun pop of solids while nestling nicely with the triangular quilted pieces each accentuating the light/dark tones in the prints.
The strips feature one of my fave things to do when sewing and that's topstich. I get so excited anytime I get to do some fun topstitching or edgestiting!
Love it. For this bag the topstitching centers and weights the strips adding a nice finish.
Ohhh... the stitching!
The triangle corner pieces are quilted in a diamond like pattern that replicates and plays on the pattern design that I ADORE in Indie.
It's
fully lined with pockets and even the straps feature batting to keep
your shoulders comfy when you are bringing along your latest hand
quilting project or maybe even that sweater you are working on. Heck
you could even fit an afghan in there!
I love when something that starts as a dreamy sketch in the wee hours in the night turns into my favorite, go to-bring anywhere bag. Would you like to make one too?

To make an Indie Project Bag you will need the following supplies:
- (1) “Fat Quarter” of each of the following prints from Indie & Pure Elements for your outer bag:
- PE-428 Nocturnal Pure Elements *
- PE-426 Apricot Crepe Pure Elements *
- IN-5102 Afro Fusion Dusk *
- 1/2 yard IN-5209 Tapestry Salmon (for outer bag and straps)
- 1/2 yard IN-5207 Royal Nature Nectar (for lining & pocket)
- Co-ordinating thread
- (2) pieces 16 1/2“ x 16 1/2“ of batting for bag
- (2) pieces 6“ x 26“ of batting for strap
- (1) 14mm Magnetic Snap
- (2) 2” x 2” pieces of batting for snap
Quilting Pins if desired.
- Fabric Marker
Seam Ripper
Scissors and/or rotary cutter & mat
*Note: A fat quarter is 18" x 22". I chose to do my straps in the same colorway as one of my triangle prints so I used a 1/2 yard of that particular fabric to get my strap length. You could easily swap your strap fabric for a different print or a solid as well and be able to make the outer pieces with just fat quarters.
Finished dimensions of the bag: 15 1/2" x 15 1/2"
